Sylvia Washer

We give thanks to God for the life of Sylvia Washer, former Executive Presbyter of Mission Presbytery, who died in The Woodlands on Sunday July 4 after a lengthy illness. As well as serving as our beloved Executive Presbyter, she served in New Covenant Presbytery as their Moderator. Sylvia was recognized in 2007 as Educator of the Year by the Association of Presbyterian Church Educators.

Sylvia was also known for her resource Get Ready, Get Set, Worship which helped congregations to include children in worship, and as a co-editor of the contemporary hymn collection Lift Up Your Hearts. She was also instrumental in the early days of the Junior High Jubilee at Mo-Ranch. She is dearly remembered here in Mission for many reasons, not the least of which is for the Sylvia Washer Scholarship which provides funds each year for children and youth of the presbytery to attend PCUSA camps, conferences and other events.

Sylvia is survived by her husband Phin, and their children and grandchildren. Services have not yet been scheduled; we will share plans for her memorial as they are known.

"Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, says the Spirit. They rest from their labors, and their works follow them."
